Free Things To Do In Bristol

Joining us in Bristol soon and looking for something to do without it costing a fortune? We’ve got you covered. There are plenty of free activities in Bristol to see, do, and enjoy, making your time at Aztec Hotel & Spa both fun and affordable. Here are a few of our favourite things to do in Bristol.

M Shed

M Shed

Situated on the historic Harbourside, M Shed tells the fascinating story of the city of Bristol, from prehistoric times all the way to the city’s place in the 21st century. Originally a 1950s transit shed, the site has been transformed into a museum, challenging perceptions of what it means to live in the city through recollections of the people who have shaped Bristol’s identity. Free to the public, you’ll have access to over 150 restored and digitalised films exploring the city’s industrial and engineering history, war-time experience, trading past and its role in the transatlantic slave trade. You’ll also discover over 300 objects and collections exploring Bristol’s world of culture, from art and music to industry and technology.

Clifton Suspension Bridge

Clifton Suspension Bridge

One of the best things about Bristol is that its most famous attraction is completely free to visit. Designed by the great Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel and opened in 1864, the Clifton Suspension Bridge is an iconic landmark that’s essential to Bristol’s history. The bridge draws thousands of visitors every year to stroll across for views of the ancient Avon Gorge and the stunning scenes of the busy city. The bridge is free to all visitors, and you can walk across and take as many pictures as you like. There are also free guided tours of the bridge every weekend and Bank Holiday from Easter to October.

Underfall Yard

Underfall Yard

A working boatyard that welcomes visitors who can visit free of charge, Underfall Yard is an ever-changing landscape of boats, largely due to the many skilled maritime businesses that call the yard home. With organisations dedicated to boat building, rigging, marine engineering and more, you’ll discover the story of Bristol’s Floating Harbour. The Visitor Centre features several hands-on displays and interactive maps and is home to fantastic activities to get your sea legs working.

The Matthew

The Matthew

Free of charge when moored at the M Shed, The Matthew is a stunning modern recreation of the original ship that was captained by John Cabot on his travel to Newfoundland in 1497. Hop on board and see the period-accurate reconstructions. Learn all about the ship’s history, as it was constructed in 1997 to commemorate the original’s 500th anniversary when the replica charted the same course the first Matthew had taken to Newfoundland, and how the replica took part in the Queen’s 2012 Jubilee. You’ll also enjoy stunning views of the city from all decks of the ship.

Banksy Walking Tour

Banksy Walking Tour

One of Bristol’s most notable residents, Banksy has become one of the most famous artists in the world with his fascinating mystique and his diverse, politically charged work. But before his work sold in the thousands his identity became a worldwide mystery, he was a kid on the streets with a paint can and a head full of ideas. This is reflected in the many hidden works found around the city from the artist’s early days. Thanks to a helpful online trail, you can work your way through the city and find the artist’s hidden pieces, charting a path through one of the 21st century’s greatest artist’s evolution.

Ashton Court Estate

Ashton Court Estate

Located on the outskirts of the city, Ashton Court Estate is home to 850 acres of stunning woods and grasslands and is free for visitors to explore and admire. Once the home of the historic Smyth family and designed by esteemed architect Humphrey Repton, the estate became a recognised deer park over 600 years. On-site, you’ll see magnificent deer graze and wander the scenery, and discover incredible gorgeous oak trees amidst gorgeous woodlands. There is plenty of open space for families to enjoy picnics, along with specific trails for those looking to get their walking boots on. And if you find yourself at the park in August, the estate is also home to the free Bristol International Balloon Fiesta.
